THE REGULATION OF MIGRATION, ASYLUM AND MOVEMENT IN THE 'NEW EUROPE’
34th Annual Conference of the European Group for the Study of Deviance
and Social Control
31st August to 3rd September 2006
Corinth, Peloponnese, Greece
In collaboration with School of Social Sciences, University of Peloponnese
CALL FOR PAPERS
The impact of the 2004 Madrid and 2005 London bombings brought a new and fiercely regulatory extension to the movement of people in the context of the “war on terror”. Other events, like the assassination of the film director Van Gogh in the Netherlands or the riots at the suburbs of Paris brought up new questions about immigration policies and models of integration in Europe. Ironically these have consolidated at the very time that the European Union is going through unprecedented expansion to include member states from the former Eastern bloc. In its turn, this fact brings more thoughtfulness about issues of “old” and “new” immigration and new modes of social control or conflict. This conference considers these developments, and the associated policies and practices at the central level and in each member-state of the European Union. It also welcomes papers dealing with these issues from outside Europe.
Papers are invited on any aspect of the theme, including;
- Theories of Space, Power and State Control
- Liberal Democratic States and Authoritarianism
- Immigration Policies and Models of Integration
- Countries of “new” and “old” immigration
- “Legal” versus “illegal” immigration
- Ethnic Communities; second and third generation
- Criminalisation and Victimisation of Immigrants
- Migration, Asylum and Detention
- New Systems of Surveillance
- “Suspect Communities”; Fear and Hostility
- Gender and Violence in the “New Europe”
- Trafficking Women and Children
- Organized Crime beyond Frontiers
- Cultural criminology
