The Defences of the Weak: A Sociological Study of a Norwegian Correctional Institution by Thomas Mathiesen has recently been published, and is Mathiesen’s first in depth studies of prison. Informed through Mathiesen’s two years spent observing and interviewing inmates and staff in a Norwegian correctional institution, the aim of Mathiesen’s study was to consider the extent to which American prisons fit with prison life in a different culture - Norwegian prisons were, at the time of the study, miles away from their US counterparts.

Professor emeritus of sociology of law in Oslo, Norway, Mathiesen has gone on to a vast range of studies in this and other areas – prison abolition, the sociology of power and counter-power, the media, the Internet and so on. He is currently engaged in a large-scale study of political surveillance in Europe and elsewhere.
